Communication in Practice: Rail Safety Week and Beyond

Supporting safer operations across rail and aviation through practical communication, industry engagement and frontline insight.

Rail Safety Week provides an important opportunity to reflect on the role communication continues to play across live operational environments — from planned engineering works and high-noise infrastructure projects through to fast-moving aviation ground operations.

At dBD Communications, communication has always been viewed as something practical rather than theoretical. In safety-critical environments, clear and reliable duplex communication helps teams stay coordinated, informed and responsive when conditions become more demanding on site.

This month, the team continues that focus across several areas, from supporting infrastructure projects in challenging environments and attending key rail sector events, through to expanding our aviation training resources designed to support customers in practice.

Supporting Communication in High-Noise Rail Environments

A recent collaboration with Van Elle demonstrated this in practice during piling operations, where machine operators reported excessive transferred noise affecting communication clarity through headset systems. With piling hammers reaching noise levels of up to 129 dB, Van Elle engaged dBD Communications to investigate how communication performance could be further improved within the operational environment.

Following site attendance and investigation, the dBD Communications team used specialised measurement equipment to analyse how noise was entering the communication chain. From there, Digital Signal Processing solutions were implemented to suppress the transferred noise, alongside further system adjustments to improve clarity and intelligibility across the headset system.

The project reflects a broader part of dBD Communications’ approach across rail and construction environments — supporting customers through practical guidance, technical support and ongoing collaboration in the field. In operational environments where communication clarity directly impacts coordination and safety, that level of support remains sets us apart, helping the teams using our equipment to work effectively in practice.

Expanding Aviation Training Resources

Following continued engagement with dBD Communications’ aviation training content on YouTube, the team is continuing to expand the video support series.

The growing library provides clear, practical guidance across dBD’s wireless duplex communication systems, covering headset operation, system setup and wider day-to-day functionality used within live aviation environments. Designed to support both onboarding and ongoing operational use, the videos help teams access straightforward visual guidance whenever required.

Supporting ground handling operations across airports worldwide, dBD Communications continues to work closely with aviation teams operating within fast-paced, safety-critical environments — where clear communication between crews remains an important part of maintaining efficiency, coordination and operational safety.

Used across sectors including aircraft handling, de-icing and Wing Walker operations, the training series forms part of our wider commitment to supporting customers beyond system supply alone, providing accessible resources designed to help teams get the most from their communication systems quickly.

Continuing The Conversation

Whether supporting live projects on site, engaging with teams across the sector or developing practical training resources for customers, dBD Communications remains focused on helping organisations communicate clearly and operate more effectively in demanding environments.
